Kering expands its family and names an outside leader to be the new CEO
Luca de Meo, former Renault CEO, has been officially appointed to take over as chief executive of Kering as of September 15.
Wait, what?
This is quite a shakeup in the senior ranks of the group, which was founded and controlled by the Pinault family.
François-Henri Pinault, son of the founder François Pinault, has led the group since 2005. But now, the luxury conglomerate prepares for the first time ever to welcome an external chief executive, while Pinault will maintain the newly separated role of chairman of the board of directors.
Why did Kering choose a fashion outsider?
De Meo is indeed the first automotive executive to take over a fashion group. Over five years as the CEO of Renault, he revitalised the company significantly with a streamlined product offer, new partnerships, and a return to growth and profitability.
De Meo has “demonstrated a passion for managing and revitalising brands drawing on their heritage and iconic models,” François-Henri Pinault told Business of Fashion. “He brings a global perspective on markets and on growth. He’s also known for uniting teams around him and around shared values and mission.”
His business acumen is exactly what Kering needs, as the conglomerate has been facing a sales and profitability downturn since late 2023. In this situation, experts say that fashion companies like Kering don’t necessarily need yet another person with fashion industry knowledge, but a visionary, a strategist, a good businessman/woman, and someone from a different sector who can bring in a new perspective. Anne Raphaël, managing partner at French executive search consultancy Boyden, told BoF that the group has “wonderful experts internally for fashion. What matters now is vision, leadership and performance”.
The shakeup in Kering’s senior ranks could therefore mark the beginning of a turnaround so essential to the luxury group.
