Working in fashion
Fashion is a creative industry and we love it for this!
So you might believe that being a creative person and having a strong sense of style are the most important skills to work in the industry. But surprisingly, these are not the most important skills in fashion.
Working in fashion means creating amazing products, styling looks, developing new collections…
But none of these would exist without much analysis, research, planning, and yes, also numbers.
Every decision in fashion is not only taken based on a creative instinct or how beautiful and trendy a dress will be.
A bag, shoe, or clothes.. becomes an extraordinary bestseller because behind there is a lot of strategy work that all the teams: pr, business, marketing, buying, merchandising, styling, editorial… did all together before putting out the final product.
That’s why many people don’t know it, but a program such as Microsoft Excel is required in any fashion job. Pay attention when you read job descriptions, and you’ll start seeing how MS Excel is a demanded skill in any fashion job.
And before you say that it’s only required in some jobs… yes the most analytical careers such as buyers, brand managers, and marketing managers… use it every day to make their analyses.
But also PR or stylists use it as a powerful tool to organize their job and keep track of samples, shootings, and more.
So are you ready to acquire this skill to become more qualified for your dream fashion job?
Enrolments for the course “Excel for Fashion” are opening soon!
This is the first and only course tailored to the fashion industry.
So for the first time ever, Excel is fun, easy and fashionable!

What's happening in the industry this week💚?
Tiffany & Co. celebrated its 185th anniversary!
Opening a special ‘Vision and Virtuosity’ exhibition in London.
It also marks the high fashion jewelers’ 150 year anniversary of being in London. The exhibition is based at the Saatchi Gallery in London, where there is even a room dedicated to the iconic movie Breakfast At Tiffany’s. The exhibition showcases a visual story of the brand including the archives of high jewelry including the Empire Diamond over 80 carats.
With an unforgettable dive into Tiffany’s craftsmanship and heritage, the exhibition is open until August 19. It is free to attend, tickets just need to be booked via Tiffany & Co’s Exhibition app.
Kanye West has publicly stated Adidas is copying his Yeezy slides.
Kanye took to Instagram in a since-deleted post to express his concerns that the new Adidas Adilette ’22 slider felt like a blatant copy of his iconic Yeezy slider we all know. He even mentioned that the CEO Kaspar Rørsted should contact him.
The partnership between Yeezy and Adidas began back in 2013 and the contract was renewed again for 10 years back in 2016. The Yeezy footwear has since been a popular drive for streetwear. However, Kanye is an outspoken voice in the fashion industry.
What do you think will happen next?
It seems the issue of copying and law may be a theme within the industry right now. Amazon and Cartier have joined forces to file a lawsuit against sellers on the Amazon Marketplace who are illegally bearing trademarks of Cartier, and selling copies of the luxury jeweler including counterfeit versions of its iconic LOVE bracelet.
New Balance has filed a lawsuit against Steve Madden The sneaker powerhouse claims Steve Madden has created deliberate knock-offs of their patent-protected 327 model sneaker.
Steve Madden released their Chasen model quite quickly after the instant success of New Balance 327 model took off selling over “several million pairs”. New Balance claims they created this knock-off for a “free ride” on their success.
Adidas is suing Nike over athletic technology stating that Nike has “knowingly and intentionally” infringed on nine patents related to their trainer tech. The two sportswear giants are known for being ahead of the game. Their issue is with Nike’s apps Run Club, the Nike Training Club the Nike SNKRS app, as they believe they are the first to bring data analytics to athletes.
German fashion E-commerce retailer Zalando buys Highsnobiety Although CEO David Fischer will still hold a small stake in the luxury fashion blog as he plans to continue running the business.
Even though both fashion empires HQ’s are based in Berlin, the buy-out does not mean they will merge offices.
What once began as a sneaker-focused blog back in 2005, is now a luxury fashion and lifestyle publisher. Back in 2019 Highsnobiety began its venture into e-commerce with an exclusive deal to Prada and other luxury brands as well as its own.
Zalando hopes this large stake in the luxury publisher will help attract a larger audience with the status Highsnobiety has.
“Most companies come from one end or the other — and not many have not truly managed to bring these worlds together,” Fischer said.
Fashion Career Tip of the Week
Are you worried if you studied economics but also any other analytical degree including management, business, or finance… then how can you get into fashion?
Well, let’s start by saying that you should not decide your career path based only on your degree (unless you want to become a doctor of course ;) well, in that case, you must have a medical degree).
Choose a job that you are really passionate about and if you studied economics and now you want to go into fashion, well you can and you should.
