Chanel showed its Cruise collection yesterday in Monaco, Monte Carlo
What is a Cruise Fashion Show?
Cruise Collections, or “resort” or “holiday” collections as they are otherwise known, launch in May/June between the two main ready-to-wear seasons: Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter. Unlike the two main fashion weeks that happen in fashion capitals, there are less restrictions with a Resort collection, which brands can show on their own terms outside of the industry-regulated fashion week schedules and locations. Fendi can show at the Great Wall of China, Chanel in New York, Gucci in Shangai…
The cruise collection was originally designed for wealthy cruise guests vacationing around the Mediterannean sea during wintertime who needed a wardrobe for their mid-season travels to climates different from their own. Stores were full of winter items at this time and a need for swimwear and a holiday wardrobe was missing from the racks. So fashion houses like Gucci, Chanel, Dior and others, brought cruise collections to life.
Recently with the competition from fast fashion brands that release a new drop every week, the cruise collection is an opportunity for luxury brands to inject an entirely new must-have mid-season collection into the market.
Fun Fact about the latest Chanel Cruise 23 Fashion Show in Monaco
Did you know that Coco Chanel was superstitious? She was a Leo, the fifth sign of the zodiac – hence the famous No.5.
The reason why the show was held on 5/5/22? 5 is the house signature number and guess what’s the name/number of the new bag? 22 bag ;)
Fashion Career Tip of the Week: TikTok Resume
If you’ve been a reader or listener of The Glam Observer Podcast or a student of my course Break into the fashion industry, you already know that my #1 tip for you to get a job in fashion is thinking out of the box. Going beyond the standard application is essential to get noticed in a competitive industry such as fashion. Especially when you are looking for your first job and you have no experience to leverage.
Over the past years, I’ve shared different strategies to get noticed by fashion companies, like for example cold emailing direct recruiters but also using new tools such as video cover letters.
I’ve also talked a lot about the importance of your social media presence and leveraging Instagram and LinkedIn to get the attention of fashion professionals.
But let’s not forget the latest popular social media platform TikTok. If you have only used the social media channel to entertain yourself, now it’s time to consider using it for your career by creating your first Tik Tok Resume.
Yes you read it correctly.
The social media platform last summer launched a one-month pilot program to connect users and companies.
“Interested candidates are encouraged to creatively and authentically showcase their skillsets and experiences, and use #TikTokResumes in their caption when publishing their video resume to TikTok.” the social media company said.
Even though that was just a pilot program of the social platform, this is not a reason to not create your TikTok Resume today!
In fact, regardless of the TikTok pilot program, you can and should already take advantage of your TikTok resume right away.
Why should you create a TikTok Resume if you want to work in fashion?
Posting your TikTok resume on your profile has 3 advantages:
1.Recruiters actively use social media to search for candidates, so by using the right hashtag (#tiktokresume, the hashtag of the brand (for example #dior #gucci)) you could be discovered by your favorite brands
2. TikToks go viral whether you have 1 follower or 1 million so your TikTok resume could reach thousands of people and you can get discovered by many brands
2. you can send your TikTok resume in addition to your normal resume when you do a regular online application. You can add it as a link to the emails you send, or in your CV. Companies will be really impressed by this initiative
How to create a TikTok Resume to land your job in fashion?
Make sure that your profile is public so people can watch your videos
Start by saying your name and what you studied. You can even begin with more direct sentences such as “These are the reasons why you should hire me!”
Talk about your experience, skills, interests and anything that can be useful for the company to know! ”I’m driven, passionate, and my desire to learn and grow will make me the best candidate”
Tell them why you are a good hire
If you want you can even go more specific by adding your career goal and addressing it to a specific company that you can tag @ on the social platform
So yes, just like I recommend having multiple versions of your PDF CV, you could end up having multiple videos, TikTok resumes one for each company!
End your TikTok video with a call to action such as I’d love to have a chat to talk about a potential job opportunity.
Add your email address on the final video so they can contact you.
As you probably know I’m not looking for a job, because I’m a career coach and my job is to help you find the job of your dreams :D but to help you and give you a better idea I’ve created a version of my TikTok resume so you can take inspiration from it and use it to build yours!
Remember: be creative, be unique and build a TikTok resume that represents you
