Launchmetrics, the company best known for its program that measures the impact of social media posts around fashion week, released its inaugural ranking of the top 20 glossy magazines of Q1 2023 in terms of fashion, luxury, and beauty advertising, out of the 2,000 analyzed titles.
This metric calculates the percentage of advertising pages captured by a magazine out of the total advertising pages scored by the top 20 publications. The average was 2.25 pages of editorial coverage for each ad.
British Vogue is at the top of the list, having covered almost 400 fashion, luxury, and beauty brands over Q1 2023. Actually, 9 international editions of Vogue have made it to the list, which doesn’t come as a surprise, being the leading fashion publication.
So, what does this ranking tell us?
As you may know, historically, print magazines have been relying in big part on advertising in order to survive - an imperative that is growing nowadays due to the increase of digital publications and the readers’ interest in reading content online. Therefore, print publications are faced with the need to attract advertisers across fashion, luxury, and beauty brands, and this new metric measures how well magazines perform in these terms.
As a consequence, “it is evident that publishers are competing to attract brands by creating more editorial content in order to get the brands to invest in their publications,” said Alison Bringé, chief marketing officer at Launchmetrics. This competition in the editorial industry is happening because advertisers don’t buy pages at any magazine, but whose editorial voice resonates with the brand and the audience it is targeting. So "publishers are competing to attract brands by creating more editorial content in order to get the brands to invest in their publications,” according to Alison Bringé.
However, as much as magazines need advertisers, they also benefit from the magazines as a medium to promote the brands’ products and attract more customers. So it’s a win-win situation and a sign of hope that print media is not disappearing, which is good news for those who enjoy reading print.
Does your favorite title figure in this list? Are you more into print or digital magazines?
