10 Things You Didn’t know about The Met Gala
This year’s Met Gala is happening this Monday May 2nd, while we wait for the red carpet looks, let’s learn more about the most important fashion event of the year.
The Met Gala is organized each year to raise money for the Costume Institute. The Costume Institute has a collection of more than thirty-three thousand fashion objects from the fifteenth century to the present.
In 2021, the ball raised over $16.4 million.
Each year the event launches the new annual spring fashion exhibit.
You can’t buy a ticket to attend the event. The Met Gala is by invitation only. Vogue’s Anna Wintour has the final say over every invitation and attendee. Even though companies buy tables for the night, it seems that they still need Anna’s approval for each guest that is going to sit there.
Each paid seat reportedly costs around $35,000. Not everyone pays. Celebs, young designers and politicians are usually guests of big brands or the museum.
It always happens on the first Monday in May, except in 2020 when it was canceled during the pandemic and in 2021 when for the first time, the event was held in September (but we will all remember the past edition more for the date out of the regular schedule, for Kim Kardashian appearance in a total Balenciaga black look covering her face).
The party dress code is usually themed to the exhibition. This year’s exhibition theme is “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” which is the second of star curator Andrew Bolton’s two-part show exploring the roots of American style. (Part One was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”). The dress code is “gilded glamour.”
For a brand this is event is A LOT OF marketing, brand awareness and exposure. All the world's eyes are looking at the red carpet of the Met Gala. Fashion people confirm that the red carpet is the party itself more than what happens inside. Everyone is interested in knowing who wore what, even though most of the time, designers join the red carpet with the celebrities they have been working for other fashion campaigns as well, so it’s easy to predict who will wear what if you are a true fashion expert (remember Demna who arrived with Kim Kardashian? she’s also the face of the brand for other campaigns.)
There is a documentary about it to learn more The First Monday in May,
This year’s special co-hosts are Regina King, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Honorary chairs include Anna Wintour of Vogue, Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and Tom Ford.
What's happening in the industry this week💚?
It’s all about fashion collaborations
Zara is collaborating with Good America
The size-inclusive fashion brand Good America founded by Khloè Kardashian and Emma Grede is teaming up with Zara on a special denim collection.
Zara is not well known for many collaborations. It started releasing co-branded collections in earnest just last year, first with Everlast, then Kassl Additions, then Charlotte Gainsburg, then Ader Error. In late 2020, Zara linked up with the CFDA/VogueFashion Fund on a capsule highlighting its 2019 finalists; on the beauty front, it's also partnered with Jo Malone on fragrances.
The campaign Good American x Zara has been shot by Mario Sorrenti.
Fendace (Fendi x Versace) which debuted during September 2021 Fashion Week, is dropping in stores on Thursday, May 12, through a series of global pop-ups and events. The collection will be divided between Fendi and Versace online and among retail boutiques, with Fendi presenting the “Versace by Fendi” collection while the “Fendi by Versace” styles are offered at Versace boutiques, along with the brands’ online stores at fendi.com and versace.com. A mini capsule line of the joint “Fendace” looks will also be up to shop at both fashion houses, respectively.
Uniqlo is collaborating with Marni. The collection that hits stores on May 26th, is priced from $12.90 (for socks) to $179.90 (for outerwear) and includes both menswear and womenswear.
Vogue Philippines is launching in September and Bea Valdes will be the editor in chief.

Nice things
April the 27th was the last day of a two-week exhibition Coming of Age, a Louis Vuitton Foundation exhibition to pay tribute to Virgil Abloh, who passed away on November 28, 2021. As an extension of the one initially created in 2019, this new materialization of the American designer's universe brought together exhibition spaces, events and digital activities.
This bouncy castle that served as a set for a fashion show on the Place Dauphine in Paris for the LV Spring-Summer 2020 collection, was presented as part of the exhibition.
