Vogue started as an illustrated magazine with the first issue released on December 17, 1892. The cover was designed under the creative direction of Harry McVikar, an illustrator whose work appeared regularly in the glossy publication.
The earliest illustrations displayed artwork created by famous illustrators like Georges Lepape, Ethel Wright, Eduardo Benito, Carl Erickson, René Gruau, André E. Marty, and many more.
While most covers were created by leading fashion illustrators, fine artists including Marie Laurencin, Giorgio de Chirico, and Salvador Dali
