What happened in the industry this week? 💚
New debuts at upcoming Milan Men’s Fashion
Between January 12 and 16, there will be many interesting shows you should keep an eye on:
Sabato De Sarno will make his menswear debut at Gucci, following his first ready-to-wear show in September.
Tod’s men’s collection was designed in between two creative directions, as Walter Chiapponi staged his last collection for the house in September and the newly-appointed Matteo Tamburini will make his debut in February.
The former Moncler designer Ludovico Bruno will also stage his first runway for his emerging label Mordecai.
There are also some brands that we won’t be seeing during this menswear season in Milan, such as Etro, which will stage a coed show in February, and Moschino, which is still missing a creative director since Davide Renne’s sudden death in November.
Donna Karan reboot
Since Donna Karan stepped down in 2015 as head of her eponymous brand, founded in 1984, and the G-III Apparel Group bought it from LVMH for $650 million in 2016, the group announced this week that it is rebooting Donna Karan New York with a spring collection, launching in February.
The new collection will be inspired by archival looks designed by the founder, notably her “Seven Easy Pieces”, which then included a bodysuit, a tailored jacket, a skirt, pants, a cashmere sweater, a leather jacket, and an evening look, and became known as the basics of a fully integrated wardrobe. Morris Goldfarb, chairman and chief executive officer of G-III said to WWD that “The new Donna Karan will be a modern system of dressing reimagined for today’s women who are craving accessible luxury and will address the full lifestyle needs of a new consumer and a new era. With the imminent launch, we unveil not just a collection but an extended experience, developing new licenses that embody the essence of our brand’s evolution.”
Ray-Ban’s Meta smart glasses give style advice now
The eyewear company announced on Tuesday that it’s working on an artificial intelligence feature for Meta smart glasses that can recognize objects, hear requests, answer questions, and even give style advice, WWD shared.
Tag Heuer is relaunching eyewear
The new eyewear collection of Tag Heuer will be manufactured and distributed by Thélios, owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. The first collection under the deal will be revealed during January’s LVMH Watch Week and presented at an event in Milan on February 1. Thelios’ executive Alessandro Zanardo said to WWD that the new collection will include “breakthrough innovation in design, in mechanical solutions, in materials, in quality,” and include “new materials that have never been used in the eyewear industry, solutions that come from industries [and] the mechanical precision taken from watchmaking.”
The hottest bags on the resale market are…
Rebag released its Clair 2023 report that investigates the value of brands on the resale market this year. According to the report, Telfar, recognized as the top-performing brand in the 2022 report achieved a 228% average value retention, earning the “off the charts” descriptor. Telfar is followed by other investment-worthy handbags of Hermes, Goyard, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton, among other luxury brands.
Zara removed a controversial ad campaign from social media
The campaign was perceived by some people as “insensitive to the human suffering in the Israel-Hamas conflict”, while Zara said, according to WWD, that “the images were of unfinished sculptures in a sculptor’s studio and was ‘created with the sole purpose of showcasing Craftmade garments in an artistic context’.”
Saint Laurent opened the largest flagship in Paris
The new largest, 4-level flagship store will be opened to the public on Saturday at 123 Avenue des Champs-Élysées. Creative director Anthony Vaccarello was inspired by “modernist architecture and contemporary art” meant to impart “sophistication, modernity and timelessness,” according to WWD.
How department stores are doing this Holiday season?
At the beginning of the holiday season, people were more excited about shopping than expected, according to the November sales report from the Census Bureau. But, department stores didn’t do so well and had a 5.2% drop in sales compared to last year. This shows that these stores are having a tough time. Macy’s got a cheaper offer from real estate investors to buy them out, making things even harder for the industry.
On a better note, stores that sell clothes and accessories did a bit better with a 1.3 % increase, although they didn’t do as well as the whole industry.
Economist Stephen Stanley said November had a lot of promotions with big discounts, making people interested in buying, especially after Black Friday. Although the Thanksgiving shopping time did better than thought, the slower time between Cyber Monday and Christmas wasn’t as bad as expected. Experts think there will be a 2 to 4% increase in holiday shopping, which is about the same as the 3.1% increase in prices. Now, everyone is looking forward to a strong finish, with a survey saying a lot of people plan to shop on December 23, known as Super Saturday.

The legendary British fashion journalist Suzy Menkes hosted a pre-birthday party on Wednesday night (her birthday is December 24) at Dover Street Market in London. She invited designers including Simone Rocha, Sarah Burton, Michael Kors, and Christopher Kane to celebrate.
What’s new in sustainability 🌱
LVMH and Chanel will cooperate on sustainability
The LVMH group announced during the LIFE 360 summit on December 14, attended by brand presidents and creative directors, that it will cooperate with Chanel on sustainability. The goal? To “harmonize corporate and social responsibility reporting and audit schedules at the supplier level,” according to WWD, adding that the luxury conglomerate “will also directly support its suppliers through a partnership program titled Life 360 Business Partners, and will launch LVMH Circularity, which will reuse unsold products from across group houses in new projects, among other initiatives.”
