You’ve probably heard a term in communication called “press release” but do you know who uses them in fashion, what goes inside this document, and have you ever seen an example?
Knowing what a press release is and how to write it is important especially if you want to work in fashion PR, so here we go.
In the fashion industry, a press release is a document that brands use to share news with the press. It is produced internally by the PR team or externally by the PR agency if the brand works with an agency.
A fashion press release can be used to announce:
A fashion show
The launch of a new product, collection, or brand
The appointment of a new designer or creative director
A new headquarters
The opening or closure of a new store
The launch or closure of a magazine
A sales performance
A sustainable initiative
Awards and nominations, etc.
Most of the news you see in the media about the fashion industry has been communicated to the press contacts through a press release. That’s how publications find out about the different projects and events. While some news can be found in some press databases, through word of mouth, or simply by reading news elsewhere, the press release remains the official and direct source of information that fashion companies provide to their press contacts.
A press release can be issued for different purposes, depending on what goal the brand wants to achieve with the spread of that information. It can be to get extensive media coverage by providing all the details about the product or event or to tease the news
