What's happening in the industry this week?💚
Pharrell Williams staged his first show for Louis Vuitton
The first collection of Pharrell Williams as the new creative director of Louis Vuitton, the Men’s Spring Summer 2024, was one of the most awaited events, and it happened on Tuesday night at the Pont Neuf in Paris.
For his debut show, the designer brought back the iconic Damier print, introduced in 1889. The reinvented chessboard print called “Damouflage” appeared on outwear, jeans, bags and boots, sometimes in the form of pixelated images from iconic movie scenes, designed by E.T. Artist.
Williams also focused on the bags; the “Speedy” bag was a central piece of the collection. Other items that were showcased included the brand’s signature trunks, backpacks, and cargo pocket bags. In addition, the designer reimagined the classic Louis Vuitton monogram with the word “lovers” printed on bomber and varsity jackets, taking inspiration from Williams’s home state’s slogan “Virginia is for Lovers”.
Can we just say we LOVED the show? Such a great start!
Christopher Kane is closing his label
The London-based fashion designer left his namesake brand on Wednesday afternoon after 17 years in the business. The official board is now hiring administrators to shut down the operations. The company shared with the press that “a period of accelerated marketing activity will now follow, with a view to locating potential interested parties to either refinance the company’s existing debt, or alternatively locate a purchaser for the business and assets.”
Rihanna appoints new Savage X Fenty CEO
The lingerie brand, founded by Rihanna in 2018, has appointed Hillary Super as the new CEO, effective on June 26. The company’s goal is to take the business to the next level by expanding beyond e-commerce by developing further into bricks-and-mortar and kickstarting wholesale. Hillary Super was previously the CEO of Anthropologie Group, and she also held leadership positions at Guess, American Eagle, Gap and Old Navy. Rihanna will remain the brand’s executive chair.
Vans is launching a new label
The surf, skate, and streetwear brand announced it’s launching a new premium label called “OTW” during Paris Fashion Week. With the first drop planned for early 2024, the new label will produce new silhouettes of sneakers and have collaborations, just like other Van’s label Vault, which was launched in 2003 and will conclude by the end of 2023. Men’s, women’s and unisex apparel and footwear will be presented in two distinct lines under OTW by Vans: OTW, a designated space for collaborators, and Premium Standard, an elevated collection of classics.
“We’re launching a new platform where we’re going to house our most pinnacle product expressions and brand experiences. This is also where the brand will intersect with innovators in the culture of skate, style, design and entertainment,” told Ian Ginoza, who came up with the concept of OTW, to WWD.
Antik Batik launches menswear
Gabriella Cortese, the founder of the French boho label Antik Batik launched in 1992, will present the brand’s first men’s collection for spring 2024 during Paris Men’s Fashion Week. “We had a lot of men who were buying the women’s pieces, so I decided to make a dedicated collection for men,” Cortese said in a statement to WWD.
Marc Jacobs collaborated with Melissa
Marc Jacobs partnered with footwear brand Melissa, launched in 1979, on a special collection of lightweight vegan and sustainable footwear that consists of 3 styles inspired by the color palette of the Marc Jacobs ready-to-wear collection: the Melissa Clog + Marc Jacobs, the Melissa Becky + Marc Jacobs and the Melissa Slide that are all available in black, off-white, red, and silver (and blue for the Clog and the Slide).
