Have you heard the big news of the week?
Sarah Burton is leaving Alexander McQueen.
The Kering group said in a statement on Monday that Sarah Burton would be leaving the house where she has served as creative director since 2010 and that her spring 2024 collection would be her final one. Her successor is yet to be announced, and Burton’s next projects remain unknown for now.
This is a big moment in the history of the brand since its founder Alexander McQueen passed away in 2010, which led to the appointment of Sarah Burton to carry his legacy. However, her career at AMQ dates back to the 1990s. Here is the story.
Burton studied print fashion at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in the late 1990s. After graduating, one of her instructors, Simon Ungless, introduced her to Alexander McQueen in 1996 who consequently offered Sarah an internship at his design house. And so, she became McQueen’s personal assistant and was subsequently promoted in 2000 to head of womenswear.
Her first collection as creative director of AMQ was the spring 2011 one, which was applauded for adding a feminine touch to the late designer’s creations, but she has also stayed true to his darkly glamorous aesthetic and managed to maintain the prestige of the brand by launching impressive collections year after year.
One of Burton’s biggest career moments at the house was designing the wedding dress for Kate Middleton, and she remained her go-to designer since then.
Following the royal wedding, Sarah Burton received the Designer of the Year Award in 2011 at the British Fashion Awards. She was also honored in 2012 by then-Prince Charles with an OBE (Order of the British Empire) and in 2019, she received the Council of Fashion Designer of America International Award.
Sarah Burton has dressed many celebrities including Zendaya, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Gisele Bundchen, Margot Robbie, Lady Gaga, Michelle Obama, Nicole Kidman, Timothée Chalamet, and Harry Styles, which were also career-defining moments for the designer. We can’t wait to see her next projects.
What’s your favorite collection of AMQ by Sarah Burton?

London Fashion Week is here!
After the triumphant first Vogue World event that was staged in New York last September, the second annual Vogue World 2023 opened London Fashion Week yesterday night at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The one-of-a-kind show was masterminded by an international Vogue team headed up by Anna Wintour and Edward Enninful and featured performances of opera, theater, film, and classical and pop music, and showcased the best of the autumn/winter 2023 collections during the finale, closed by the original supermodels Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista.
The goal of Vogue World in London was to celebrate the UK’s rich cultural scene and fashion. All net ticket proceeds from the event will benefit a wide range of performing arts organizations in the capital.
Have you seen the live show? You can (re)watch it here.
We can’t wait to see London Fashion Week’s shows (running until September 19) including Burberry, Erdem, JW Anderson, KNWLS, Molly Goddard, Richard Quinn, ROKSANDA, and Simone Rocha. You can view the complete schedule here.

New exhibitions
Chanel in London
The V&A museum in London is about to open an exhibition dedicated to Chanel from September 16 to February 25 of next year. “Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto” is the first U.K. exhibition dedicated entirely to the French fashion designer, spanning six decades of her career, starting with the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910, and ending with her final show in 1971.
Balenciaga in Paris
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2023, Kering’s headquarters in Paris is hosting a range of programs that includes an exhibition dedicated to Balenciaga. It will be open to the public on 40 Rue de Sèvres, only this weekend on September 16 and 17.
“Figures of Style” will show 30 couture dresses designed by Cristobal Balenciaga between 1946 and 1968 for his important clients, such as Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, and other famous figures. One interesting feature of the exhibition according to Balenciaga, as shared with WWD, is that it “breaks away from the standardized, model-sized way fashion is typically presented and exalts “the uniqueness of each individual’s morphology and the way in which personality can be expressed through clothing.”
Louis Vuitton launched a podcast
The French luxury brand launched a bi-monthly podcast “Louis Vuitton [Extended]” hosted by French fashion journalist and documentary maker Loïc Prigent. The first episode was released yesterday and features Pharrell Williams discussing his debut menswear show for the French luxury brand, staged in June. With this new venture, Louis Vuitton intends to promote itself as a “cultural brand”, providing a “deep dive into the creative heart, minds and projects of the maison,” the brand said to WWD.
