Virgil Abloh tribute exhibition opens TODAY
The Brooklyn Museum in New York are honouring the late creative
Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech exhibit opens today, July 1, 2022. Abloh was known for becoming Louis Vuitton’s first African-American Artistic Director and for founding streetwear brand Off-White.
Virgil’s once-in-a-lifetime creative mind left a huge impact on many people’s hearts and on the fashion industry, you may even say he revolutionized street style while forever changing the dynamic of equality in the fashion industry. The humble, joyful and positive self-made African-American designer reinvented the streetwear aesthetic in a world of high fashion.
The exhibition is developed by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and is the first-ever exhibition dedicated solely to Abloh’s work. Featuring collaborations with artists and his friend Kanye West, pieces from his label Off-White and his time at Louis Vuitton.
The Museum will also sell a publication available to purchase there, curated specifically for the exhibition.
McQueen’s McQ line is Suspended
Launched back in 2006, Alexander McQueen hoped to reach a new customer base in the expansion of the brand focusing on denim and informal wear.
"As the fashion market is rapidly changing, Alexander McQueen and Kering are evaluating the future of McQ as a company in its present form. Therefore, business operations have been suspended for the time being. The company will stand by McQ employees during this period until a conclusion is reached." - McQueen Reported
Valentino also suspended their Valentino Red line, as did Dolce and Gabanna with their D&G line.
Ten years ago now, the label even hosted its own first fashion show and expanded to opening a store in London. However, it seems the growth since then has not been enough for Kering-owned fashion house Alexander McQueen, with the results they were not expecting it has not been suspended.
Lisa Aiken is the new Executive Fashion Director at Vogue.com Leaving Nieman Marcus, Aiken will now be reporting to none other than Anna Wintour in her new role.

Hulu’s Victoria Secret’s documentary is coming sooner than we think
The documentary series titled, Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons, will explore how the lingerie powerhouse became one of the most popular labels in the world to its heavy downfall.
The three-episode series will explore its then CEO Les Wexner and even his ties with Jeffrey Epstein. Dating back to the 90s and early 2000’s we will see the success of the company and how in the late 2010s it became under heavy scrutiny for its toxic environment and harassment claims.
The show will air exclusively on Hulu July 14.
Loewe showcased living plants on clothes their SS 2023 show hosted in Paris incorporated live plants into garments. Spanish textile designer Paula Ulargui Escalona, began developing the technique as just a student in the final year of her Fashion Design degree.
The show definitely caught some eyes for its months’ works of collaboration.
“We spent four months testing different garments [and] accessories until we decided which ones we wanted and which plants we wanted,” - Ulargui Escalona
Sportswear brand Puma is set to come back to fashion week in a venture to form a key presence in the US, the brand is set to stage a show at New York Fashion Week physically and digitally.
The show will be held on September 13 and feature a number of collaborations, just like their 2016 show with Rhianna for Fenty.
"We are thrilled to be collaborating with the CFDA and to be back on the official NYFW calendar,- With an emphasis on digital, a great lineup of ambassadors and an amazing creative partner in June Ambrose, the foundation and creativity for a great show are there. And we're excited that this can be the moment for us to bring it to life." - Adam Petrick, global director of brand and marketing at Puma
Fashion Career Tip of the Week
I get asked often what are the skills you need to work in fashion. There isn’t just one answer here because skills change with each position and company.
However there is one that is common among 90% of the fashion jobs: Microsoft Excel.
Wait, what? Why?
The reality is that those who work in fashion spend a lot of, the majority of their time actually, on a laptop answering emails and planning and making analyses on Excel sheets.
So if you had no idea that MS Excel is such an important skill in fashion and why, then first of all you are not alone. I didn't consider it at all when 10 years ago I was at the beginning of my career in fashion. But my role as a fashion career mentor is to help you break and succeed into fashion and reveal you the industry secrets so you can make it. So be prepared to learn the 3 reasons why MS Excel is the #1 skill you need if you want to work in fashion, listen to the podcast episode to learn 3 reasons Why MS Excel is the #1 Skill you need to work in fashion now on Apple Podcast or Spotify
Nice things
Fall / Winter 2023 Shows are truly underway…
Jacquemus never fails when it comes to giving us an aesthetically pleasing show pushing the usual fashion calendar.
Taking place on salt mountains in the south of France, Jacquemus presented his Fall collection full of romantic and poetic bridal themes.
Even showcasing his new Nike collection which was released the same day and sold out in 15 minutes!
What to watch this week
Even more fashion week content? It’s hard to narrow down from all the incredible shows that took place this week, but one to definitely watch is Marc Jacobs’s Fall 2022.
A dystopian theme ran through with exaggerated silhouettes and half-shaven bangs (as seen on Queen Bella Hadid). With the shocking news of changing abortion laws in America, the New York-born fashion house chose to label their collection Choice as a stance to support women.
The show was even live-streamed in Times Square takeover on Monday!
