What’s happening at Kering again?
Last week we already discussed that something big was happening at Kering when the group announced that the CEO of Gucci would leave the maison in September and that the CEO of Saint Laurent would become Deputy CEO of all Kering brands. But who would have imagined that just one week later the French group would have announce another news of the year (and usually the end of July and August are calm months in terms of news for the industry, which is mainly the reason why this newsletter has been on pause for two years in August (maybe this year I will have to email you sometimes :D)?
Yesterday, the French luxury group Kering, which already own brands such as Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, Gucci, Alexander McQueen… announced that they have acquired 30% of the Valentino brand for 1.7 billion euros. Valentino brand is part of Mayhoola, a Qatar investment fund that acquired it in 2012 for 700 million euros. The fund had also acquired Balmain in 2016 and Pal Zileri. The deal is part of a broader strategic partnership between Kering and Mayhoola, which could lead to the Qatar firm becoming a shareholder of Kering. The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2023, subject to approval. Kering has an option to acquire 100% stake in Valentino by 2028.
Some believe that the acquisition is due to a slowdown of the Gucci brand in this past year (imagine the pressure of Sabato De Sarno appointed creative director succeeding Alessandro Michele. All eyes will be on him in September when he is going to present his first collection for Gucci. Interestingly, Sabato De Sarno was previously at Valentino's, and worked side by side with creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli).
But in reality, regardless of what people say about Gucci, it is part of the groups' strategy to acquire brands to include in their package. You may recall the recent takeovers of Tiffany's rival LVMH group or Estee Lauder's acquisition of Tom Ford. In short, this is how it works. One thing to know is that when a brand becomes part of a group, it does not acquire the brand itself but also access to production lines in general which can then benefit the other brands in the group. So it will be interesting to observe how this unfolds.
