Inside Fashion #1
Happy Earth 🌍 Day!
The fashion industry has been challenged a lot recently with sustainability issues and companies are thinking about how the industry can have a positive impact on the planet. I have read different pieces related to this issue today but this story is def my favorite:
Rosario Hevia started to notice how many children’s garments are wasted when she got pregnant with her second child, a boy and she couldn't use many pieces from her first daughter. She then decided to build her first company Travieso, a used-baby-clothing marketplace and upcycling business. But it was by the end of 2019, when she heard of an old yarn factory up for sale, that she then created her new company Ecocitex where they create yarn out of textile waste. Brilliant right? You can read the full story on Vogue.com
What's happening in the industry this week💚?
After over 20 years that Condé Nast operated in Russia with titles including Vogue Russia and Russian editions of GQ, GQ Style, Tatler, Glamour and AD… they have announced they are closing Vogue Russia and ceasing publishing due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and related censorship laws.Condé Nast suspended publishing operations in Russia in March, and today said “the escalation in the severity of the censorship laws, which have significantly curtailed free speech and punished reporters simply for doing their jobs, has made our work in Russia untenable,” a statement emailed to Condé Nast global employees reads. Also the other media company Hearst Magazines, which owns Elle, Esquire, Harper’s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan, terminated its licensing agreements for its Russian publications a day after Condé Nast announced its suspension in March.
Apparently robots still can’t sew clothes. Yep companies are still going to hire humas for this LOL. While machines have replaced men in building cars and in other industries, it looks like that as much as a t-shirt might look simple, its fabric is not so easily reproducible by a machine because it bends and stretches I read in an article published on BOF.
After being publicity accused of sexual assoult in late December 2020,Alexander Wang has re-entered the fashion industry with a fashion event and a show in LA chinadown in the middle of the coachella music festival. Some are still not ready to forgive Wang, while some others from the industry look to be totally fine with it such as Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio who walked the runway and A-list stars like Rihanna who wore one of his looks lately.
Off-white launched a beauty line: Paperwork! The new line has launched with the genderless collection of 4 SOLUTION fragrances, IMPRINT face and body solid pigments, and COLOR MATTER nail polishes. Officially sold on the brand website and on Farfetch the luxury marketplace that yes on Monday has officially entered the beauty market as well.
Kate Moss’s daughter Lila makes her own British Vogue cover debut. This article covers the story behind kate’s first British Vogue cover is a nice one to read if you are interested.
Nice things
Look at this pinky Balenciaga Pop up store that has just opened in London to celebrate the launch of the new it bag Le Cagole. Inspired by the Balenciaga archive and the famous Motorcycle Bag, you probably have seen Le Cagole in the latest Kim Kardashian Balenciaga campaign or on Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber or Dua Lipa. To celebrate the launch, the brand has put together a Instagram friendly pop up with everything covered in pink furr.

Fashion Career tip of the week: Many identify the fashion portfolio as a collection of sketches and designs. But this definition would limit the portfolio to fashion designers only while I do believe it’s a strong document that any fashion creative can build. In fact, I prefer to define the fashion portfolio as a collection of your projects. Why you need one? To have more chances to get the job! It's a way to show companies what you can do no matter the experience you have. Click here to read my latest article on How to Build a Fashion Portfolio for each career (designers, writers, pr, stylists, SMM…)or as usual, there is also the podcast episode available on Apple Podcast and Spotify.
Fashion Profiles to follow this week:
Safa Sahin is the head of Sneaker Design at Balmain and previous at Nike. It's super fascinating to follow his creative process and the sneakers he designs are AMAZING!
Federica Caiazzo writes for Elle Italy, has her own newsletter Moda in China and a new job at Gianvito Rossi! If she's not the perfect example of a multi-hyphenate, multi-talented multi-everything in fashion, then who?
