What happened in the industry this week? 💚
Carolina Herrera received the Hispanic Heritage Award
The Venezuelan-born designer will be granted the annual award for fashion at the 37th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards (HHAs), taking place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Opera House on September 5. The Hispanic Heritage Award was established by the White House in 1988 to commemorate the creation of Hispanic Heritage Month in America and is supported by 40 national Hispanic-serving institutions.
Born in Caracas in 1939, Carolina Herrera started her career in fashion around 1965, working as a publicist in Emilio Pucci's subsidiary company in Caracas. In 1980, she moved to New York, and her interest in the business side of the industry made her consider launching her own fashion company.
Herrera initially planned to become a textile designer. When she shared her plans with her close friend Diana Vreeland, a legendary former Vogue editor-in-chief, the latter recommended her to build a collection instead. Carolina listened to her mentor’s advice and created her debut collection of 20 looks. On April 27, 1981, she held her first fashion show at the Metropolitan Club, a private social club that allowed for the first time to host a fashion show within its walls.
After 37 years in the business and over 72 shows at her back, Carolina Herrera’s years as creative director of her eponymous brand ended in 2018 when she presented her last fall collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She moved into an ambassadorial role at her company, and Wes Gordon succeeded as creative director.
Carolina Herrera x Net-a-Porter
Carolina Herrera’s creative director Wes Gordon is launching an exclusive collection with Net-a-Porter, dropping on Monday. The spring-summer ‘Cabana’ capsule of 17 ready-to-wear pieces was inspired by “the idea of a summer trip to the Côte d’Azur,” the designer told WWD.
Stella McCartney x Saks
The British fashion designer partnered with Saks Fifth Avenue to launch an exclusive eveningwear capsule, called “Stellabration”. The collection revisits red carpet dresses from Stella McCartney’s archive, which were recreated in midnight tones exclusively for Saks, according to WWD. The collection also offers crystal-embellished vegan accessories including the Falabella bag and Elsa kitten heels.
Telfar launched Telfar Denim
Telfar introduced a new unisex denim collection that has been in development for 20 years. Although the fashion brand is most known for its now famous bag, it started as a genderless clothing label, founded in 2004 by Telfar Clemens in New York City. Telfar Denim is now being sold at telfar.net.
L Catterton is helping to take Tod’s private
Tod's founding Della Valle family, the company’s majority shareholder, is reportedly trying to go private for the second time in less than two years, this time with the help of L Catterton, a private investment firm backed by the luxury conglomerate LVMH, according to Reuters. In an agreement with Della Valles, L Catterton is offering to buy 36% of Tod's at €43 ($46) a share, spending up to €510 million ($545 million). The offer values the company at just over €1.4 billion ($1.5 billion), versus a market value of 1.2 billion.
Puig is now a publicly traded company
The Spanish parent company of Carolina Herrera, Rabanne, and Jean Paul Gaultier began trading on the Spanish Stock Exchanges (Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, and Valencia Stock Exchanges) - a key moment in the Company’s 110-year-old history. The listing follows the company’s Initial Public Offering (IPO), with an offering of €2,610 million priced at €24.50 per offered share, making it the largest IPO in Europe this year.
Burberry won the trademark infringement lawsuit in China
The British luxury brand has been awarded more than 6 million renminbi (equivalent to 675,668 pounds) in damages in a lawsuit against Xinboli Trading Shanghai, which was accused of selling and advertising products “using Burberry’s protected checked graphic trademarks on Tmall and WeChat, along with the trademark “Baneberry” and a registered logo resembling Burberry’s Equestrian Knight design,” WWD reports.
Fashion Career Tips
Struggling to land a job in fashion?
Your emails could be one of the reasons why your applications have been rejected.
I’ve noticed that around 70% of the emails I get contain significant mistakes. This demonstrates a lack of professionalism that leads to rejection of your fashion job application or inquiry.
And if you send the wrong email to major fashion brands, (think Dior, Vogue, etc.) they will probably reject your applications even faster, considering they receive even more.
Writing a professional email is just an important part of the job application process like a resume, cover letter, and portfolio.
Read our latest article, where we explain how to write the perfect email to fashion brands for job opportunities.
