Milan Fashion Week is here!
I couldn’t be more excited because I live in Milan and can feel the vibes of the glamorous world of fashion more than ever! My city is hosting fashion week between September 19 and 25, and a lot has happened already.
Peter Hawkings made his runway debut at Tom Ford
This one has been a long-awaited show since Tom Ford stepped from his role as creative director in April this year. Hawkings’ collection, presented on Thursday night, was inspired by the 1960s and 1970s glamour, and revisited some of the founder’s iconic pieces, like the velvet pantsuits from Ford’s years at Gucci. He also brought men’s and women’s looks closer together. “We’ve been working on changing manufacturers, making sure shoes are beautifully made and comfortable, and bringing the tailoring up to the same level as the men’s,” he shared with Vogue.
Diesel returned to open-to-public format
After opening the spring 2023 show to the public last year, with creative director Glenn Martens’ commitment to bring the runway to a large and diverse audience, Diesel returned to the format this spring 2024 season as well AND hosted a free 8-hour rave party for 7,000 people. Through an online registration process, anyone was able to secure tickets for free to attend the show live on a first come, first serve basis.
Moschino celebrated its 40th anniversary
The Italian brand celebrated this special occasion with a special runway show on September 21. As Jeremy Scott no longer serves as creative director (since March) and the successor should be named in the next few weeks, the collection was designed by stylists Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, Katie Grand, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, and Lucia Liu. Each of them created 10 contemporary looks inspired by the works of the brand’s late founder Franco Moschino. According to WWD, the runway show was conceived to pay tribute to “the remarkable achievements” of the late designer - who died at age 44 in 1994 - “and his enduring legacy,” as the company stated when it first revealed the project last June.
Moncler and Pharell Williams staged an event
To celebrate the launch of their new collection, Moncler and Pharell Williams staged an event on the opening night of Milan Fashion Week with dancers and performers who wore pieces of their collaborative outerwear line inspired by “glamping” that includes outdoor apparel and accessories in the earthy-tone palette, dropping in stores today.
This glamorous collection is not their first though. Indeed, Pharell Williams is a long-time friend of the Moncler family since they first joined forces for a special line of men’s jackets in 2009. He also designed a “Bulletproof” vest for the brand in 2010, and last year, the two collaborated on the iconic Maya 70 jacket.
What’s next for MFW?
The Attico prepares to stage its first fashion show in Milan
This was a first for designers Giorgia Tordini and Gilda Ambrosio since they founded The Attico in 2016, who used to present their collections inside Milanese apartments, before transitioning entirely to the digital medium. Their first runway show will take place this Saturday on a street in the Arco della Pace neighborhood in western Milan. “The street is the most democratic of places and the stage for real life,” Ambrosio shared with WWD.
Finally, we cannot wait to see Gucci’s show today at 3 pm CEST when the new creative director Sabato de Sarno will present his highly-anticipated debut collection, 'Ancora' (the show has been moved last-minute to Gucci’s headquarters due to the rain). You can watch it live on Gucci’s website, YouTube channel and Instagram.

What's happening in the industry this week?💚
Balmain has been robbed
In other fashion week news, as Paris Fashion Week is approaching, the French Maison Balmain’s latest collection of nearly 50 pieces has been reportedly stolen from a ‘hijacked’ truck on the trip from the airport to Balmain headquarters.
Chioma Nnadi to replace Edward Enninful
Conde Nast has named Chioma Nnadi as the new head of editorial content of British Vogue, who will start her new role on October 9. Her appointment prepares a transition for the British edition of the glossy magazine, as the current leader Edward Enninful holds the position of editor-in-chief and also European editorial director of Vogue. He was the only remaining EIC to hold this title besides Anna Wintour as in recent years, Condé Nast has eliminated editor-in-chief roles at most of Vogue’s international editions with the goal to streamline editorial operations and cut costs. So when Chioma Nnadi takes over, she will align British Vogue with the magazine’s other European editions.
Nnadi has been working at Vogue since 2010. She started as a writer, rose to the post of fashion news director, and most recently took over as editor of Vogue.com. She also serves as the co-host for the Vogue podcast, The Run-Through.
Dior is launching a denim line for men
Dior menswear designer Kim Jones is launching The Dior Denim line - the first denim capsule collection of the brand, which will hit the stores on October 19. Aimed at a younger and more casual clientele, the capsule includes denim pieces made from eco-friendly cotton, priced between 750 and 1,900 euros.
Jean Paul Gaultier unveiled his next guest designer
The honor of the new guest designer at Jean Paul Gaultier has been given to Simone Rocha, the London-based designer who will present her collection next January during Paris Fashion Week. She will thus become the sixth guest couturier after Rabanne’s Julien Dossena, Haider Ackermann, Olivier Rousteing of Balmain, Glenn Martens of Y/Project, and Diesel and Sacai’s Chitose Abe.
We can’t wait to see what this exciting collaboration will bring, as the two designers have a very different aesthetic. Gaultier’s signature style is cone bras and smokings, while Simone Rocha is famous for her ultra-feminine and romantic dresses. She launched her eponymous brand in 2010, the same year she graduated from the acclaimed fashion MA at Central Saint Martins.
Collabs
Jimmy Choo x Jean Paul Gaultier
Jimmy Choo and Jean Paul Gaultier teased a footwear collaboration coming this October. The capsule collection will blend the two brand’s house codes and a shared vision for “powerful, confident and glamourous femininity,” said Jimmy Choo in a statement, as reported by WWD. The creative team will be led by Sandra Choi, creative director of Jimmy Choo, and Florence Tetier, creative director of fashion at Jean Paul Gaultier.
Rimowa x Tiffany
If you need a vanity case for jewelry, The German luggage firm Rimowa and the jeweler Tiffany&Co. created just the one to safeguard all your rings, bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. Designed in Rimowa’s recognizable grooved aluminum on the surface, and Tiffany’s signature Tiffany Blue shining on handles, wheels, and interiors, this new case is a true elevated fashion statement and will hit the select brands’ stores on September 26.
Fashion Career Tip of the Week
Are you following fashion shows of your favorite brands and you are interested in becoming part of the team that produces fashion events?
Working in Fashion Event Production is an exciting yet demanding field that combines creativity, logistical prowess, and a knack for managing chaos into a visually stunning and smoothly executed spectacle. Those who organize fashion events have the incredible creativity + organizational ability to transform a bare venue into a runway location or a spectacular set to present a new product.
Fashion shows, product launches, press events, exhibitions, gala, award ceremonies, store openings, and other fashion events help brands gain exposure and promote a new product or collection, and they couldn’t happen without a fashion event producer behind it. Want to know what it takes to organize a fashion event and how YOU can do it as well?
