Fashion events at the Salone del Mobile in Milan
Milan is currently hosting between April 16 - 21 the Salone del Mobile Design Week. Founded in 1961, the annual trade fair showcases new designs in furniture and interiors.
As many luxury fashion houses have developed their businesses beyond fashion toward homeware and furniture, (such as Fendi, Armani, Prada…) they noticed the potential to showcase their creations during Milan Design Week, which represents the opportunity to offer a complete lifestyle to their top-spending customers. Therefore, fashion is widely present at the event this year.
Here are 7 fashion initiatives which I saved on my list to visit as I live in Milan.
1.Bottega Veneta, On The Rocks
The immersive installation at Palazzo San Fedele, the Milanese home of Bottega Veneta takes place at Piazza San Fedele 1/3 from 16 to 20 April. ‘On the Rocks’ “will shape the second chapter of a narrative journey that began with the autumn/winter '24 fashion show”, according to Vogue.
2. Loewe Lamps
Loewe Lamps is the exhibition that will present an exclusive collection of 24 lamps created on commission by internationally renowned artists who have a strong link with Loewe. It will take place from 15 to 21 April, at Palazzo Citterio in Via Brera 12.
3. Balenciaga Art In Stores
The boutique at Via Monte Napoleone 23 has been hosting the Balenciaga Art In Stores project since April 13. The store has been transformed into a reimagined art gallery, featuring 8 works from the ‘Timeless Symbols’ series by Andrew J. Greene.
4. Gucci Design Ancora
Co-curated by Gucci’s creative director Sabato de Sarno and Michela Pelizzari, the brand’s flagship store in via Monte Napoleone 7 is hosting from 15 to 21 April an exhibition of “five pieces emblematic of Italianness and Milaneseness”.
5. Saint Laurent Rive Droite
Saint Laurent Rive Droite collaborated with Ginori 1735, reissuing 12 original plates from the collection Villa Planchart Placeholders designed by Gio Ponti in 1957. The exhibition curated by creative director Anthony Vaccarello is open to the public from April 16th to 21th at Chiostri di San Simpliciano (in Piazza San Simpliciano 7).
6. Versace Home, If These Walls Could Talk
Versace opened to the public the doors of its Palazzo Versace, at 12 Via del Gesù for an audio-immersive experience suggesting what the Italian house represents.
6. Dolce & Gabbana Home
The Italian luxury brand organized the Gen D Vol. 2 event, running at Via Broggi 19 from April 16th to 21st, which displays the works of young talents Byungsub Kim, Ella Bulley, Hannah Lim, Jie Wu, Laurids Gallée, Daniel Valero, Mingyu Xu, Riccardo Cenedella, Thabisa Mjo and the Touche-Touche duo, selected by curator Federica Sala.
7. Moncler, An Invitation To Dream
Moncler transformed Milano Centrale railway station into one of the world’s largest public galleries with a new exhibition, titled ‘An Invitation To Dream’. For this project, Moncler has collaborated with Jefferson Hack, the co-founder and CEO of Dazed Media. The exhibition centers around a series of portraits and a short film and features international creatives spanning numerous disciplines, from music and art to food.
This is a non-enhaustive list of fashion initiatives, as there are many other fashion brands present at the Salone del Mobile, including Hermès, Loro Piana, Fendi, Zegna, Ralph Lauren, and more. You can check the full list of exhibitors on this page.
We’d be happy to hear which ones you are planning to visit and your impressions in the comments.
What happened in the fashion industry this week 💚
Roberto Cavalli passed away
The world has lost a fashion icon, who died last Friday at 83. The Italian fashion designer was known for his glamorous designs and colorful prints.
Roberto Cavalli was born on November 15 1940 in Florence, Italy. He comes from a family of artists. His grandfather, Giuseppe Rossi, was an Impressionist painter and a member of the Macchiaioli Movement, whose work is exhibited in the renowned Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Influenced by the career of his grandfather, Roberto Cavalli enrolled in the Academy of Art in Florence in 1957 but eventually decided not to become an artist. "My dream, maybe because of my family, was to be a painter. I chose in one moment the direction of textiles; from textiles I went to fashion," he told Vogue.
Despite this career transition, Cavalli’s background as an aspiring painter is what made him successful. He drew inspiration from it to experiment with textiles by applying painterly techniques to them - a technique that had not been practiced before. Cavalli showed his first collection of printed leather gowns at the Paris Salon du Prêt-à-Porter in February 1970 and has been known and acclaimed for his extravagant animal prints ever since. The iconic fashion designer who in fact preferred to call himself a “fashion artist” will be missed.
Louis Vuitton presented a Voyager show in Shanghai
Not long after the fashion season ended last month, Louis Vuitton is bringing us another fashion thrill. The luxury brand staged on April 18 its first runway show under the Voyager Show format at the Long Museum West Bund in Shanghai. It was creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s first show in China. On this occasion, he collaborated with Chinese artist Sun Yitian, inspired by her paintings of animals.
Dior presented the Pre-Fall 2024 collection in New York
Staged on April 15 at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, it was creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri’s first-ever runway show in New York, the result of her longtime dream to showcase a collection in the city.
But that’s not the only reason why Dior chose the American fashion capital. The founder Christian Dior also had a history with New York, where he opened his first international ready-to-wear atelier in 1948, calling it the Christian Dior New York collection, which included designs made specifically to suit the American lifestyle. The Pre-Fall 2024 collection also includes designs that were commissioned by actress Marlene Dietrich to Christian Dior.
Gucci’s upcoming Cruise 2025 show in London
Sabato de Sarno will present his first cruise collection for Gucci at the Tate Modern in London on May 13.
Years before Gucci was founded in 1921, Guccio Gucci worked as a luggage porter and lift boy at the sumptuous Savoy Hotel in London. It’s there that the founder had the idea of creating his own line of luxury suitcases. So the city has a special place in the history of the Italian luxury brand.
The location is also relevant for the modern Gucci, as “Here [in London], the interplay of art and architecture creates an environment that inspires innovation and challenges boundaries, much like the city itself,” the brand said in a statement to WWD. “Inspired by multiple journeys to London over time, where he immersed himself in the city’s diverse cultures, Sabato De Sarno seeks to capture the essence of London’s spirit - a coming together of ideas, styles and personalities, defined by contrasts that spark creativity.”
CFDA Fashion Awards 2024
The annual CFDA Fashion Awards 2024, organized by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and presented by Amazon Fashion will take place on October 28 at the American Museum of Natural History - the same location as last year. The nominees shall be announced later in the year.
Shayne Oliver is Jean-Paul Gaultier’s next guest designer
The Hoddy By Air founder will unveil his guest ready-to-wear collection for Jean Paul Gaultier on May 6. About 50 pieces are expected, according to BoF, designed to be worn “from couture to the bedroom floor,” Oliver said to the publication.
Dior x Parley for the Oceans: part 3
Dior is releasing its third menswear beachwear capsule collection with the environmental organization Parley for the Oceans, dropping on May 16. The collection, which includes clothes, accessories, a stand-up paddle, and a hammock, is made of 100% sustainable fabrics, with 30% using Parley’s ocean plastic fabric, and the rest eco-certified, according to WWD.
LVMH sales grow 3%
The luxury conglomerate reported a rise of 3% in sales on an organic basis for the first quarter, according to BoF. The fashion and leather goods division grew 2% on an organic basis. LVMH didn’t disclose the exact numbers of sales but only said Louis Vuitton’s sales growth was reported “slightly above” the segment’s average, while Christian Dior’s was “slightly below”.
Brunello Cucinelli’s sales grew 16.5% in Q1
The company reported a 16.5% increase in revenues in the first quarter of 2024. “Sales amounted to 309.1 million euros, compared with 265.3 million euros in the same period last year,” WWD reported, adding that “At constant exchange rates, revenues rose 17.9 percent.”

The Spanish beauty and fashion company announced it will begin trading in Spain on May 3. Puig’s initial public offering could raise a total of 3 billion euros.
