Fashion Awards 2022: first information revealed
December is always an important month in the fashion industry: the time of the Fashion Awards. A few days ago, the British Fashion Council has announced nominees for The Fashion Awards 2022, set to take place at the iconic London venue Royal Albert Hall on December 5th (which sounds like the first Monday in May, but in December), and we are excited to reveal them to you today. Wondering what the Fashion Awards are, and what does this spectacular night entail? Don’t worry, we have all you need to know about this year’s biggest fashion ceremony.
What are the Fashion Awards?
Formerly known as The British Fashion Awards, the Fashion Awards is a fundraiser organized by the British Fashion Council (BFC) Foundation every year at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London since 17th October 1989. (P.S: The British Fashion Council is a group of the most key individuals in the industry who come together to strengthen British fashion in the global economy as a leader in responsible, creative businesses). Known as one of the most glamorous and elegant events of the year, the ceremony focuses on celebrating excellence in the fashion industry and supporting the future pipeline of creative talent. Designers, editors, models and celebrities come together to award the winners of various categories who have made a contribution to the fashion world: emerging designers, the best brands, the best model, and all those who have left a mark during the past 12 months. You can think of it as the Grammys but for Fashion!
The annual awards are decided on by the BFC’s judges (which is made up of over 800 crucial members of the global fashion industry). One award we can expect to see reoccur each year is the Outstanding Achievement Award, possibly one of the most exciting awards to be presented! Tommy Hilfiger was the one to win it last year, and among other former winners we can find Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada and - non surprisingly - Anna Wintour who received the award in 2014.
As a fundraiser for the BFC Foundation, the Fashion Awards is a charity event that focuses on helping to support the growth of the British fashion industry through educational purposes. In 2020/21 the BFC raised £1.7 million for the BFC Foundation and its talent support initiatives, and in has supported over 30 upcoming designers in 2021.
Who are this year’s nominees?
The Fashion Awards distribute awards in 4 categories that include: Designer of the Year, which recognises a British or international designer whose innovative collections have made a notable impact on the industry; the Independent British Brand; Model of the year, which recognises the global impact of a model who over the last 12 months has dominated the industry; and the BFC Foundation Award, which acknowledges an emerging designer who has received support from the Foundation this year and has had a major impact on global fashion in the last 12 months.
These are the 2022 nominees:
Designer of the Year: Demna for Balenciaga, Johnathan Anderson for JW Anderson & LOEWE, Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta, Miuccia Prada, Pierpaolo Piccioloi for Valentino
Model of the Year: Adut Akech,Bella Hadid,Lila Moss, Paloma Elsesser, Quannah Chasinghorse
Independent British Brand: Bianca Saunders, Erdem, JW Anderson, Molly Goddard, Wales Bonner
BFC Foundation Award: Ahluwalia, Chopova Lowena, Nensi Dojaka, S.S. DALEY, Wales Bonner
This year’s ceremony also includes 15 “Leaders of Change,” which highlights the designers, brands and creatives who have made a positive change within the industry, through 3 main categories of Environment, People and Creativity. The co-founder and CEO of Dazed Media, Jefferson Hack, is also set to receive a Special Recognition Award for Cultural Curation for his work in empowering young people. The event will also spotlight 50 of the most innovative talents from around the world, as part of BFC’s “New Wave: Creatives” initiative.
We are very excited to see the results. Meanwhile, you can revisit last year’s Fashion Awards here.

Hottest fashion brands and products of the third quarter revealed
The latest report from Lyst Index revealed the hottest fashion brands and products of the third quarter. It’s the Italian labels that dominate the rankings, composing half of the overall list of 20 brands. Gucci remains at the top of the list, followed by Prada, Valentino, Balenciaga and Miu Miu in the top 5.
Among the most in-demand products, there are the Miu Miu ballet flats, followed by the Birkenstock Boston clog, the Prada logo tank top, Ugg Taz slipper and the Adidas Samba sneaker. Additionally, this quarter Lyst introduced a new category — dubbed Breakout Brands— which highlights the important names to watch in the fashion industry. These are: Coperni (how could we forget Bella Hadid’s spray-on dress, which generated over 1 million mentions on TikTok), Jaded London and Chopowa Lowena.
Balenciaga releases a coat made of mycelium
The Kering-owned fashion house released on October 26 a black, hooded wrap coat using a leather alternative made from mycelium “Ephea” - a kind of alternative material produced through fermentation-based proprietary processes, deriving from the combination of biotechnological processes and advanced material science.
Revealed for the first time during Autumn-Winter 2022 Balenciaga’s show at Paris Fashion Week, this coat became the first available garment to be made using Ephea. With the launch, Balenciaga becomes the latest fashion house to use other materials instead of leather alongside Hermès, Ralph Lauren and Reformation who are working, respectively, with material innovation companies like Mycoworks, Natural Fiber Welding and Ecovative, as well as Stella McCartney and Ganni and others including Balenciaga’s own parent company Kering who have partnered with Bolt Threads on its mycelium-based product Mylo.
Skims will receive inaugural innovation award at the 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards
Kim Kardashian, Jens Grede and Emma Grede, cofounders of the brand Skims, will receive the inaugural Innovation Award presented by Amazon Fashion at the 2022 CFDA Fashion Awards’ ceremony on November 7 at Casa Cipriani in Manhattan, New York.
The Innovation Award recognizes a fashion visionary, leading with technology and innovation that shapes how customers are shopping for fashion. Launched in 2019, the underwear, loungewear and shapewear Skims brand pioneered new technology in the process of reinventing the concept of solutions-oriented shapewear, and continues to innovate, expand its selection and introduce categories at more accessible prices, looking to connect with women of all ages, sizes and backgrounds.
Balenciaga and Adidas end partnership with Ye
Lately, several fashion brands had decided to cut ties with Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, who made anti-Semitic comments in public a few weeks ago. On October 20, the parent company Kering said Balenciaga would no longer be collaborating with Ye, following the launch earlier this year of their Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga line.
Adidas was the latest company to end the partnership with Yeezy branded products on Tuesday, and this decision is expected to have a short-term negative impact of up to 250 million euros in net profit this year.
Who will be the next American Vogue's Editor-in-Chief?
The fashion industry is always curious to know who will replace Anna Wintour at American Vogue. Recently, speculations arose, suggesting Edward Enninful - the British Vogue’s editor-in-chief - to assume this position, to which he responded that he is not interested in Anna Wintour’s job for now, although this may change later, as he shared that while touring his book around the world he realized he "can really do better in the world than maybe I can on one magazine."

LVMH signs an energy efficiency pact with Chinese developer Hang Lung properties
The world’s largest luxury group and the Hong Kong based real estate developer Hang Lung Properties signed an energy efficiency pact this Tuesday, October 25, committing to a 3-year partnership. The ceremony was attended by Antoine Arnault, LVMH head of image and environment and Hang Lung vice chair Adriel Chan.
The two brands agreed that Hang Lung Properties will cut its energy consumption by 18% by 2025 across its 100 shopping malls, in part by turning off shops’ lights outside of business hours, while LVMH committed to measuring and tracking energy consumption at its stores and sourcing 70% of its materials within 300 miles. This follows LVMH’s overall energy reduction plan, which aims to cut consumption 10% worldwide by October 2023, as it has been announced on September 15. Additionally, Antoine Arnault shared that the Group is seeking out similar agreements with property groups in the U.S. and Europe.
