Do you dream to get a job in fashion, or do you already work in the industry? Then it is important to know fashion terms.
Getting familiar with fashion terminology can help you learn the fashion industry fundamentals and navigate the vocabulary used in the industry with confidence. When you read or hear something related to fashion, it is so easy to get lost in the fashion jargon, so knowing it allows you to better understand the context in which it is used.
Maybe you are preparing for an interview with a fashion company and you want to look professional to the recruiter by using the correct industry terms? Or you are studying to learn about the industry? Then it is worth learning some of the most common fashion words, which will give you a competitive edge.

What's happening in the industry this week?💚
CFDA invites 10 new members
The Council of Fashion Designers of America, presided by Thom Browne and composed of 458 womenswear, menswear, jewelry, eyewear, and accessory designers, has invited 10 designers. The new CFDA members are Brandon Blackwood, Colm Dillane, Tremaine Emory, Danielle Hirsch, Greg Lauren, Raul Lopez, Jamie Okuma, Daniel Roseberry, Rio Uribe, and Elena Velez.
“These 10 designers were purposely selected and invited by the board of directors, which is a great honor,” said Lisa Smilor, CFDA executive vice president.“ The CFDA looks forward to their active participation within the organization and working together to help champion and elevate American fashion and drive positive change.” The CFDA offers exclusive membership for the most prominent designers in America, who are chosen by election and invitation only. The organization also provides its members with thought leadership and business development support.
L’Oréal acquired AESOP
The French conglomerate announced on April 3d that it has signed an agreement with Natura &Co to acquire Aēsop, the Australian luxury beauty brand for $2.525 billion, which is l’Oréal’s largest deal to date. According to Vogue Business, this acquisition took place as l’Oréal is targeting Chinese customers, and many of them are using Aesop products, which are vegan and cruelty-free, and for this reason, they help l’Oréal to position itself in the clean beauty space.
Reebok and Milk Makeup collaborated on apparel and footwear
Reebok has partnered with the vegan beauty company Milk Makeup, known for its clean cosmetics, to release a limited-edition collection of apparel and footwear on April 14. The collection was inspired by the Equipment Room at Milk Studios “where functional workwear is a must.” It includes new-look iterations of footwear models: the Classic Vegan, the Club C 85 Vegan, the Classic Make It Yours Vegan, the Club C Geo Mid Vegan, and the BB 4000 2 Vegan, all made of 100% vegan materials and zero animal byproducts. The apparel line includes the Milk Lux Hoodie and the Milk Bodysuit.
Burberry opened a pop-up store on New York’s Fifth Avenue
The new pop-up running until May 2 features the brand’s signature check pattern and offers trenchcoat custom-made personalization service.
Michael Roberts passed away
Michael Roberts was a famous fashion journalist, illustrator, stylist, filmmaker, author, and photographer. He held roles such as Vanity Fair’s first fashion and style director, Vanity Fair’s Paris editor, Condé Nast Traveler contributing editor, The New Yorker’s fashion director, the London Sunday Times’ style director, Tatler’s art director, and British Vogue’s design director.
The Kensington Palace hosts the “Crown to Couture” exhibition
The exhibition opened on Wednesday and will run until October 29 at the Kensington Palace State Apartments. With the aim to show how the royals dressed during the Georgian era and discover how it has inspired today's iconic red-carpet looks, the exhibition showcases more than 200 contemporary and 18th and early 19th-century costumes and objects.
A new fashion exhibition inaugurated in India
The recently inaugurated Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai, opened last Sunday an exhibition called "India in Fashion: The Impact of Indian Dress and Textiles on the Fashionable Imagination", which was curated by Hamish Bowles, global editor-at-large for Vogue, and designed by Patrick Kinmonth with Rooshad Shroff. The exhibition features works of pioneering Indian fashion designers, as well as Couture and Reday-to-wear of Chanel, YSL, Balenciaga, and Christian Dior, among iconic designers, that were inspired by the Indian arts and crafts since the 18th century.
An exhibition dedicated to Chloé will open this fall in New York
A new exhibition “Mood of the Moment: Gaby Aghion and the House of Chloé” on the French fashion house and its founder Gaby Aghion is set to open at the Jewish Museum in New York on October 13. This will be the first major museum exhibition on Chloé or its founder to be held in New York City.
Daniel Lee will create costumes for the Royal Ballet
Burberry’s creative director is currently working with director and choreographer Wayne McGregor to create the costumes for his latest production at The Royal Ballet, which will premiere on June 9 at the Royal Opera House in London.
Zara and Wallpaper released a travel guidebook
A new fashion book recently came out by Zara and Wallpaper. The 300-page coffee table book “Where To Now” is a travel guide series that covers 5 destinations Bruton (UK), Ojai (US), Galicia (Spain), Naoshima (Japan), and Namibia. In the past few weeks, the fashion industry has had a focus on India, with the Dior Pre-Fall show in Mumbai on March 31, and the opening of “India in fashion” exhibition, so it’s worth learning more about what’s going on in the fashion scene in India.
This week, you can listen to this podcast, in which The Business of Fashion invited Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri to discuss the recent Dior show, her intimate relationship with India, and her appreciation for Indian craftsmanship.
What to read this week 📚
Attention, fashion, and “Euphoria fans”! A24 released “Euphoria fashion” - a book written by the series’ costume designer Heidi Bivens. It features an introduction by Jeremy Scott, behind-the-scenes of the TV show, conversations with cast members including Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, and Alexa Demie, along with the show’s makeup artist Doniella Davy and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson; Q&As with designers like Coperni and Arianne Phillips.
Also, Fashionista published an article about the average salaries in fashion in 2022. So you can read it to have an idea of how much fashion professionals make nowadays in retail, marketing, design, editorial, etc.
