The new ways magazines are looking for revenue streams?
We have seen the shift from print magazines to digital in the editorial industry, and earnings going from the advertising pages to affiliate links. But what is next for fashion magazines? It seems Elle has tapped into a whole new exciting revenue stream this week: the Hearst publication is opening its hotel!
So, where is Elle’s grand hotel? No other location than the fashion capital of the world, Paris. Set to open this fall, travellers heading to France have one hotel to add to their bucket list for a chic holiday.
The international office of Elle is set to open Maison Elle in Paris’ 17th arrondissement, near the Arc de Triomphe in October. The 4-star hotel will host 25 rooms decked with vintage French furniture. The grand hotel will also feature a spa and a fashion library filled with Elle’s 77-year-old archive for guests to scan.
“As travel [picks up] more and more, travellers want to come to a hotel for an experience and we… believe we can attract Elle readers and fashion lovers, All the big groups of hotels are trying to find ideas, concepts for hotels, but we have a great concept as a magazine and we will be really focused on design in the forefront and… cultural immersion.”- Constance Benqué, Chief Executive of Elle International.
The partnership between fashion and hospitality offers a great level of brand identity while providing an experiential visit. Providing more than just picking a magazine up online or at a newsstand, or even reading via the internet. Venturing into hospitality allows Elle to offer a memorable experience. Benqué is hopeful they will pick up even more magazine subscribers.
Elle already has over 150 partners for licensing in over 80 different countries. Entering a varied amount of business sectors from beauty to fashion and accessories. Hospitality is the latest venture for the magazine.
They are not stopping there, the iconic French magazine is set to open an eco-resort in Mexico in 2023.
Elle might be the first fashion magazine to enter the hospitality business, but they are certainly not the first fashion company to do so. It seems luxury fashion houses have had their eye on the market for quite some time pre-lockdown.
Bulgari opened their first hotel back in 2004 in the heart of Milan. They now run 7 establishments across the globe including Europe and Bali.
Armani also is set to open a third hotel in Saudi Arabia in 2025. The fashion brand already has 2 hotels in Milan and Dubai.
LVMH owns over 50 lavish hotels directly through its own hospitality brands, Hôtels Cheval Blanc and Belmond Hotel Group. The luxury corporation appointed a new hospitality executive earlier this month, gesturing its significance.
Fashion magazines have previously only dabbled in new sectors such as beauty or fashion introducing affiliate links or video ads online as they enter a digital world. Elle might be the ones thinking ahead creating experiential marketing to gain new consumers and hold customer loyalty.

What to watch this week
This week we talked about what and who the CFDA are. Do you know what the fashion councils really do? The CFDA not only run the fashion calendar and hold the awards ceremony but help aspiring designers. You can read more here.
The American fashion council actually acquired the NYFW calendar from Ruth Finely, the woman who created the first-ever fashion week schedule. Finely was the original publisher of the Fashion Calendar and the organiser of the official schedule in her 70-year long career. The new movie hit our screens this year exploring her journey. It is now available on iTunes or Amazon Prime.
