A short history of DVF wrap dress
The Brussels Fashion & Lace Museum is hosting from April 21 to January 7, 2024, an exhibition called “Woman Before Fashion” dedicated to Diane von Furstenberg’s wrap dress, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2024. For the occasion, let’s discover the history of this iconic fashion piece.
The wrap dress is the piece associated with the name Diane von Furstenberg, and even though technically, she is not credited for having invented it, she is the one who made the wrap dress an iconic and desirable fashion piece that became a symbol of feminity and elegance.
Diane von Furstenberg created the wrap dress in 1974 - 2 years after launching her design career. She initially designed a cotton jersey shirt dress and a wrap dress similar to the one ballerinas wore and had the idea to mix these two pieces into one single garment - a dress that wraps around the chest. And so the wrap dress was born.
It was an instant sell-out and an international success and put Diane von Furstenberg’s name on the fashion map. The wrap silhouette accentuated the feminine curves and became a sensation among women of all ages and body types who felt sexy and empowered in this piece, which they could wear for every occasion - from work to parties. Besides the flattering silhouette, it’s also the jersey fabric that attracted the wearers because it was comfortable, wouldn’t wrinkle, and made the dress look casual yet elevated.
Actress Cybill Shepherd wore the DVF wrap dress in “Taxi Driver” in 1976 and the piece became a cult in the 70s.
“It’s for a woman who is the woman she wants to be”. Diane von Furstenberg
