Chanel’s Artistic Director Virginie Viard is making the brand more and more successful.
This week, the French luxury house reported record revenues in 2023, reaching $19.7 billion, up 16% at comparable rates. Chanel global chief executive officer Leena Nair said that the brand’s revenues have “more than doubled its revenues and headcount in the last decade,” according to WWD.
Such success is attributed to the current creative director Virginie Viard. Since she joined the house in 2019, “Chanel’s ready-to-wear business has been multiplied by 2.5 and it grew 23 percent last year alone,” chief financial officer Philippe Blondiaux reported to WWD.
Virginie Viard has been working at Chanel for over 30 years. After starting her career in costume production as an assistant to Dominique Borg, she joined Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel in 1987 as an embroidery intern. “Immediately Karl was asking me, ‘What do you think of this?’ ‘What do you think of that color?’ I was so embarrassed,” Viard shared with Vogue.
Since her arrival at the Maison, Viard played an instrumental role there, assisting Lagerfeld’s creative process. The late designer famously described her as “my right arm…and my left arm”. Her internship soon transformed into a full-time job.
In 1992, she followed Karl to Chloé (he previously designed for the brand from 1963 to 1983) and worked there by his side for 5 years before coming back to Chanel as coordinator of haute couture. In 2000, in addition to couture, she was assigned ready-to-wear and accessories collections in her new role as Director of Chanel’s creation studio.
When Karl Lagerfeld died in February 2019, Virginie Viard came as a natural successor at the house, debuting her first solo collection with a Cruise 2020 show in Paris. She recently presented her Cruise 2025 collection on May 2 in Marseille.
