What happened in the industry this week? 💚
Let’s talk about Alessandro Michele’s first (surprise) collection for Valentino
Since he was appointed the creative director of Valentino almost 3 months ago, Alessandro Michele was expected to present his first collection for the brand at Paris Fashion Week in September. However, to the big surprise of the industry, the designer unveiled his debut collection at an impromptu press conference with a select handful of editors, according to Vogue.
Titled “Avant les Débuts” (“Before the Beginnings”,) the Resort 2025 line includes 171 ready-to-wear looks and 93 shots of shoes, bags, and accessories. The collection reflects styles of different decades, but Michele was particularly inspired by Valentino Garavani’s 1968 Sfilata Bianca collection.
The debate arose in the industry about whether or not Michele’s Valentino collection featuring maximalist styles is similar to the collections he created at Gucci, and the reactions are mixed. However, in the designer’s opinion, his Valentino collection is close to the brand’s vision. "Valentino was never a minimalist, rather a maximalist, even in the ’70s when he was at his most streamlined," he shared with Vogue.

Men’s Spring Summer 2025 Fashion Week in Paris
After London, Florence, and Milan, Paris is the final destination of the Spring-Summer 2025 Men’s Fashion Week.
Pharrell Williams’s show for Louis Vuitton stood out again. This time, the men’s creative director chose an interesting, symbolic location for the show, held at the UNESCO Headquarters, calling for more global unity and connection. “It was an homage,” he said, “to human beings.”
Another standout moment on the Paris fashion calendar will be Dries Van Noten’s farewell menswear collection, scheduled for June 22. The show will mark the final chapter of the designer’s 38-year career at his eponymous brand.
Moncler Genius is heading to Shanghai
Following last year's successful The Art of Genius show in London, the brand is preparing another immersive Moncler Genius event, set to wrap up Shanghai Fashion Week SS25 on October 19. The exact location and theme will be revealed closer to the date, but meanwhile, the brand teased in a statement to “expect the unexpected”.
Céline will release a Pilates collection
The French brand unveiled Monday a campaign starring Kaia Gerber and styled by creative director Hedi Slimane in Malibu, introducing the dedicated pilates collection, which will drop in October. It includes a mat, a kettlebell, a baseball cap, and headphones, among other products.
Saint Laurent Men’s Fall 2024 Campaign
Saint Laurent dropped an artistic men’s fall campaign, photographed by Glen Luchford with nods to Caravaggio and Édouard Manet.

Rihanna is the new face of J’Adore Dior
This just in: Rihanna signed with Dior to be the face of the brand’s iconic perfume J’Adore. According to WWD, the new campaign, shot by Steven Klein, will be released on September 1.
This is not the singer’s first collaboration with the Maison, as she started as Dior’s brand ambassador in 2015. However, this is a big moment for both because, for the past two decades, Charlize Theron was the face of J’Adore.
For a little history, J’Adore was created in 1999 by perfumer Calice Becker. It was a huge launch for the French fashion house, which first entered the fragrance world in 1947 with Miss Dior, as it signaled a return to Dior’s more elegant roots since the launch in 1985 of the previous perfume in the market, Poison. In contrast to this strong and sweet fragrance, J’Adore offered a fresh, floral scent with top notes of pear, melon, magnolia, peach, mandarin orange, and bergamot; middle notes are jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, tuberose, freesia, rose, orchid, plum and violet, and base notes are musk, vanilla, blackberry, and cedar. Supposedly, this is how Calice Becker imagined gold itself would smell. The design of the bottle, conceived by jewelry and furniture artist-designer Hervé Van der Staaten, is interesting for mimicking the feminine silhouette.
Fashion Career Tip
Do you want to work in fashion but prefer a role on the management side of the industry?
Creativity is not the only driver of fashion brands. It also takes business-oriented roles like buyers, marketers, and brand managers to run a successful fashion company. So if you don’t see yourself designing clothes and styling looks, you should look for a job on the management side of the industry.
You might be like me for example. When a decade ago I decided I wanted to get into the fashion industry, I was more interested in finding something that could combine my passion for fashion with the management side of it. That’s why I entered the industry in the e-commerce department at Alexander McQueen.
But I remember when I was at the beginning of my job search, I could find information about editors, designers, and stylists…but there was very little info about other roles in the industry, including those related to the management side. It was really hard to understand what role in fashion could fit me.
That’s why in my latest article, I wanted to give you some clarity about the different fashion management jobs if you are also interested in working on the business side of the industry.
