Alessandro Michele is leaving Gucci
All the fashion industry is talking about since yesterday is the recent Alessandro Michele’s announcement that he is leaving Gucci after having worked as creative director for 7 years and having spent 20 years overall at the Italian luxury brand.
The designer is known for completely reinventing Gucci and increasing its sales exponentially. He brought a lot to the brand, playing with gender codes and race, and creating eccentric, androgynous, and glamorous collections that are now considered Gucci’s trademark.
Let’s revisit some of his memorable moments at Gucci.
Known for breaking gender codes in fashion since his first Men’s F/W 2015-16 show, Alessandro Michele is known for having curated androgynous looks and blurring the lines between masculinity and femininity since then in all his collections.
Gucci is considered to have made many sustainability efforts under the creative direction of Michele. In 2017, the brand stopped using fur in its collections. Then in 2020, the brand announced that from now on there would be 2 fashion shows per year instead of 5 and that there would no longer be separate collections for men and women. Also, the Spring/Summer 2020 runway show in Milan and the events related to it were announced to be carbon neutral. And this summer's collection Off the Grid is the brand's first eco-friendly collection.
Alessandro redesigned the Gucci logo in 2019 by creating a new double G logo but in a different style - with the Gs overlapping and both facing right. It was used across his designs and remains a strong emblem of the brand today.
If we look at the creative director’s friendships with celebrities, he is a close friend of Harry Styles, with whom he announced in June of this year a collaboration with the launch of the “Ha Ha Ha” collection. Michele is also a friend of Jared Leto who has been the brand’s admirer and ambassador on various occasions. The two appeared in matching twin-like outfits at the Met Gala 2022.
If we have to point out one memorable Gucci campaign, it's the S/S 2018 one. Michele was inspired by Renaissance and used its elements in his designs, combining art with fashion. The campaign presented interpretations of classic paintings with the models dressed in the latest Gucci collection.
One of the most memorable Gucci's fashion shows under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele is the F/W 2018 show when Gucci sent models carrying life-sized identical human silicone heads down the runway. To make it happen, Michele collaborated with the Italian special effects studio Makinarium.
The F/W 2020 fashion show had an unusual concept with models inside a carousel. The hair and makeup artists were preparing the models for spectators right during the show. When their looks were complete, models approached the transparent glass and rotated on Gucci’s fashion carousel.
Finally, how can we forget the recent S/S 2023 “Gucci Twinsburg show” when Gucci sent over 68 sets of identical twins down the runway? They were found by Gucci’s secret scouting party during Twins Day, a twins convention in Twinsburg, Ohio. This is for sure an original way to do a show that we have never seen before.
Do you think Alessandro Michele could be the next Karl Lagerfeld? And who could be the next Gucci creative director?
What's happening in the industry this week?💚
Raf Simons is closing his label
On November 21st, Raf Simons announced via its social media channels that the SS23 collection would be the last collection from the label before he closes it down after the end of the season.
Did you know that the Belgian designer started his career as a furniture designer as an intern at the design studio of Walter Van Beirendonck? Then one day, he attended the Martin Margiela fashion show during Paris Fashion Week in 1991, and he got inspired to make a transition into fashion design.
He was encouraged to pursue his dream by Linda Loppa, head of the fashion department at Antwerp Royal Academy, and so Raf Simons became a self-taught menswear designer, launching his eponymous label in 1995 and the first F/W fashion show in Paris in 1997. In a short time, the brand gained fame for revolutionizing menswear with its anti-fashion spirit, focus on youth culture and using music and art in the creative process. Then in June 2005, Raf by Raf Simons was launched, which was sold at a lower price point, but in 2011 it got replaced by Raf Simons 1995, a diffusion line incorporating elements from Simons’s early collections.
On the side to his duties at his namesake brand, Raf Simons was the creative director at Jil Sander from 2005 to 2012, and then at Dior from 2012 to 2015. He also worked as Chief Creative Officer at Calvin Klein between 2016 and 2018. During his time there, Simons received the menswear and womenswear designer of the year award from the CFDA. Finally, Raf Simons has been the co-creative director of Prada since April 2020, working in collaboration with Miuccia Prada “with equal responsibilities for creative input and decision making,” the company said.
Louis Vuitton made a viral brand campaign with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi
As the FIFA World Cup 2022 began, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi appeared in LV’s campaign “Victory Is a State of Mind” playing chess last Saturday, and it has gone viral. It gathered 72 million likes on Instagram, 5 million of which were on the brand’s account. According to Launchmetrics, Ronaldo’s post, which gathered 38 million likes, reached a media impact value (MIV) of $2.8 million in just 2 days, while Messi’s post with 29 million likes had a MIV of $2.6 million. The total MIV of the campaign is estimated at $13.5 million.
Balenciaga is on the radar again with a controversial Holiday campaign
The brand has recently presented a public apology for its holiday campaign featuring children with bondage bear bags, which first appeared in the Balenciaga Spring 2023 show during Paris Fashion Week. The brand now removed the campaign from all its platforms.
What’s new in sustainability 🌱
Vestaire Collective bans fast fashion
As the resale platform is making efforts to be eco-friendly and encourage more responsible consumption, it removed this week 5% of the items that belong to fast-fashion brands like Asos, Boohoo, and Pretty Little Thing, thus completely banning fast-fashion labels as of November 22. Vestiaire is planning to extend that list over the next 3 years and establish more strict criteria to analyze the products’ sustainability - such as their carbon footprint, quality, and supply-chain working conditions by working with European regulators.

Nice things 💖
Dior is bringing Christmas to London. The brand created a Fabulous World of Dior exhibition, open from November 10 to January 3 of 2023, that was specially designed for the Harrods department store with cute displays entirely made of gingerbread that decorate the store’s 44 windows.
What to watch this week
Given the fact that Raf Simons is closing his brand, our suggestion for this week is to revisit his first Fall/Winter fashion show that was held in Paris in 1997.
