Today, the founder of Hermès - Thierry Hermès - was born. The French fashion house has a rich history and has released countless notable products, so today we are covering 10 of its iconic creations.
In 1925, Emile Hermès, son of the founder, creates the first men’s ready-to-wear garment, a golf jacket.
In order to complement their customers’ looks, Hermès quickly introduces jewelry in 1927 with the Filet de Selle bracelet.
1928: the first watch is made. The house began making watches already in 1912 when Emile Hermès created a wristwatch as a gift for his daughter, however, the first watches bearing the Hermès signature started selling only in 1928 at the brand’s flagship in Paris at 24, Faubourg Saint-Honoré.
1937: Hermès introduces its first silk scarf, which became a symbol of timeless elegance.
1949: the first tie is created.
1956: the Kelly bag sees the day. Originally created in the 1930s by Robert Dumas, the bag was named after Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco when she was spotted in 1956 wearing this bag.
1976: Hermès begins manufacturing shoes with the bootmaker John Lobb.
1984: the infamous Birkin bag is born. Jean-Louis Dumas, the executive chairman of Hermès at the time, met Jane Birkin on a Paris-London flight in 1981. She said not being able to find a suitable bag for her everyday needs as a young mother, so the two began discussing the ideal roomy and classic bag, and Dumas started sketching it right away.
1997: the Oran sandal is designed by Pierre Hardy for Hermès.
2013: the brand starts selling the Crocodile leather t-shirt, priced at $91,500!
