10 things you didn’t know about The Met Gala
The Met Gala is just around the corner, taking place next Monday, May 6. While we look forward to discovering the red carpet looks, let’s learn more about the most important fashion event of the year.
The Met Gala is organized every year to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It has a collection of more than 33.000 fashion objects from the 15th century to the present.
The MET Gala always happens on the first Monday in May, except in 2020 when it was canceled during the pandemic, and in 2021 when for the first time, the event was held in September.
Each year, the event celebrates the Costume Institute’s new exhibition. This year it’s "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion". The exhibition will run from May 10 to September 2, 2024, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and will “explore notions of rebirth and renewal, using nature as a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion”. Around 250 items will be shown from the museum’s permanent collection, some of which have rarely been seen in public before, spanning 400 years of fashion history.
The dress code is usually themed to the exhibition. This year it’s “The Garden of Time.”
This year’s hosts are Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth who are serving as the night’s official co-chairs.
You can’t buy a ticket to attend the event, as it is by invitation only. On average, 450 people attend it, but no one knows who exactly as until the evening before the event, the guest list is top secret. Vogue’s Anna Wintour has the final say over every invitation and attendee.
Even though companies buy tables for the night, it seems that they still need Anna’s approval for each guest who is going to sit there. The entry costs $75,000 for one ticket, with tables beginning at $350,000. Not everyone pays. Celebs, young designers, and politicians are usually guests of big brands or the museum.
In 2023, the ball raised almost $22 million - another record for the event!
For a brand, this event represents A LOT of marketing, brand awareness, and exposure. All the world's eyes are looking at the red carpet of the Met Gala. Fashion people confirm that the red carpet is the party itself more than what happens inside. Everyone is interested in knowing who wore what, even though most of the time, designers join the red carpet with their favorite celebrities, so it can be easy to predict who will wear what if you are a true fashion expert.
No one really knows what happens at the MET Gala. It’s a secret. For this reason, guests must abide by the no phone (and, therefore, no social media) policy.

What happened in the industry this week? 💚
Protests ahead of the Met Gala
Since Condé Nast announced last November to lay off over 5% of employees, “management has since added additional positions to its layoff list,” Fashionista reports. In response, Condé Union members - writers, editors, videographers… - organized last week a demonstration in Anna Wintour’s neighborhood with flyers "Anna wears Prada/Workers get nada".
Later this week, Condé Union and NewsGuild of New York delivered on Monday a video announcement to the group’s management threatening to strike if they don’t get a fair contract.
In addition, the Model Alliance led a rally Sunday morning on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to get support for the New York State’s Fashion Workers Act, meant to regulate management agencies to provide better workplace protections for models and other creatives of the industry.
The future of Marc Jacobs at LVMH
The luxury conglomerate is studying possibilities for its Marc Jacobs brand amid interest from potential buyers, BoF reports. A representative of the company said it “strongly denies it’s considering a sale of Marc Jacobs”, and LVMH “hasn’t made a final decision on how to respond to the interest,” BoF added.
Chanel staged the Cruise 2025 show in Marseille
For the Resort 2025 show, Chanel headed to the south of France, Marseille. The runway took place on the roof terrace of Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse building. We love the color palette of the new collection 💛
In addition, Chanel organized an exhibition, running from today until May 26 at the Museum of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean (MUCEUM) that showcases the work of international artists in collaboration with Le19M, Chanel’s artisanal workshops in Paris.
Ralph Lauren presented his latest collection in New York
While Chanel brought summer vibes to Marseille, Ralph Lauren gave us a winter holiday sparkle overseas. The Fall/Holiday 2024 show took place at Ralph Lauren’s offices at 650 Madison Street in NYC. The salon-style show brought people closer to the brand’s design studio, reminiscing the vibe of the American designer’s first-ever collection in 1972. The setting was intimate not only by the location but also by the number of guests; only 100 people attended the show.
Pharrell Williams x Tiffany&Co.
Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director unveiled his inaugural jewelry collection with Tiffany&Co. Named “Tiffany Titan”, the 19-piece collection includes necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings that were inspired by the mythological Poseidon’ts trident.
“I’m very inspired by the water, and the name of this collection, ‘Titan,’ draws inspiration from Poseidon, ruler of the sea, King of Atlantis — Atlantis, which is also the name of the community I grew up in Virginia Beach,” Williams said to WWD.
Prices range between $3,500-$53,000. The collection dropped in New York’s Fifth Avenue and Tiffany.com in the U.S. and will be available globally from June.
Givenchy just launched a second installment of Givenchy Plage
The luxury brand has released the second edition of Givenchy Plage. Created by the Givenchy design studio team, the exclusive assortment for summer includes ready-to-wear, shoes, leather goods, handbags, and jewelry.
Since the first launch in 2023, the house has been “inspired by the joie de vivre and laid-back refinement of Le Clos Fiorentina, Hubert de Givenchy's summer estate in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat,” according to the official website.
Givenchy has also partnered with Saks Fifth Avenue and MyTheresa for exclusive wholesale assortments dropping this Friday and on May 15 respectively.
What’s new in beauty 💄
Bella Hadid launched fragrances
The famous supermodel unveiled on May 2 her fragrance brand Ôrebella. The debut launch starts with 3 “shake-to-activate” essential oil-based scents in alcohol-free, biphase formulas. They are priced at $35 for 10mL, (P.S.: great idea to have a small bottle) $72 for 50mL, and $100 for 100mL.)
