Fashion month is over. With 80 shows in New York, 86 in London, 66 in Milan and 105 in Paris, many things happened. So this week, we decided to revisit the 10 most memorable moments that we think definitely stand out, because they injected something new to the fashion industry. Let’s take a look.
A first in the history of fashion. Let’s start with Vogue World. On September 12, Vogue organized an epic runway show and street fair at the heart of New York City’s fashionable Meatpacking district, marking Vogue's 130-year anniversary. Everyone who wanted (could afford) to attend could purchase tickets for this event.
A celebration of an iconic piece. Fendi opened NYFW with a special show celebrating the 25th anniversary of the iconic Baguette, and also the two years of Kim Jones as artistic director. And speaking about the Baguette, you probably remember the recent collaboration between Tiffany & Co. and Fendi who created a capsule Collection featuring a Tiffany-blue, Fendi-shaped baguette.
First fashion show in a new city. The Italian fashion brand Marni, which usually organizes its fashion shows in Milan, presented its first SS 2023 collection overseas, in NYC, and it took place inside an atmospheric tunnel under the Manhattan Bridge.
A theatrical show. London fashion week opened with the show of a relatively new designer Harris Reed, who is known for his gender-inclusive designs. He built the collection around the theme of the debutante ball, playing around the conventions associated with it.
A surprising location. Also in London, what caught the attention was Simone Rocha’s show’s location at the Old Bailey, the famous criminal court building where Moll Flanders is tried for theft in the classic novel by Daniel Defoe, and where Charles Darnay is put on trial for treason in “A Tale of Two Cities”.
An original performance. Moving to Milan Fashion Week, Gucci invited 68 identical twins to walk down the runway at the “Gucci Twinsburg show”, who were found by Gucci’s secret scouting party during Twins Day, a twins convention in Twinsburg, Ohio. This is for sure an original way to do the show that we have never seen before.
An anniversary presentation. Moncler celebrated its 70-year anniversary at the Piazza del Duomo in Milan. The performance was opened by the prima ballerina of Teatro alla Scala di Milano Virna Toppi and comprised 1,952 artists — a number that represents the founding year of Moncler. The models were all wearing a white Moncler Maya 70 jacket.
A designer’s debut collection. The creative director Maximilian Davis presented its first collection for Salvatore Ferragamo by paying homage to Salvatore’s origins in fashion, sharing that he "wanted to pay tribute to Salvatore’s start by bringing in the culture of Hollywood – but new Hollywood". The designer was also inspired by the sparkling red shoes Ferragamo designed for Marilyn Monroe back in 1959, which is another moment that we can remember from the show.
An inclusive show. Diesel made a big move by bringing fashion shows closer to the public. The brand invited 1,600 students from various colleges and fashion schools who were able to attend the event for free. In total, there were 5,000 attendees — 3,000 of whom were members of the public, and 70 percent of those attendees were under age 26. So maybe we will be able to attend fashion shows as guests in the future.
Another surprising location and a comeback. Since the launch of her brand in 2008, Victoria Beckham staged her first runway show in Paris - and also the first since the pandemic -which was held last Friday. The Spring 2023 ready-to-wear collection was presented in a church, and reflected the designer’s willingness to “show clothing made to be worn out on the town” and focused on her younger audience.
BONUS: The moment we will always remember.
We can say for sure that one of the most viral moments of Paris Fashion Week was Bella Hadid’s spray-on dress that was revealed during the Coperni show and made within minutes!
What’s the technology behind it? It dries instantly on impact with any surface, including liquids, to create a non-woven fabric layer. “The texture of the fabric can be changed according to the fibers (synthetic and natural, such as cotton, linen, polyester or nylon as well as recycled) and binder used, and how the spray is applied,” shared Manuel Torres who developed this patented technology and personally applied the material on Bella.
What’s also notable is that the Coperni Instagram account went from 315,000 followers to 552,000 following the show, and it garnered $26.3 million in media impact value, according to tech and data analytics provider Launchmetrics.

What's happening in the industry this week💚?
Jared Leto is making a movie about Karl Lagerfeld
After seeing the actor in the film “House of Gucci”, now we will be seeing him as the director and starring actor of his movie about Karl Lagerfeld that he is working on with the late designer’s fashion house. The film is expected to show key relationships that convey different parts of Lagerfeld’s life, and for that Jared Leto will be collaborating on this new project with 3 of Lagerfeld’s most trusted confidants who also will be the executive producers of this film: Pier Paolo Righi, chief executive officer of the Karl Lagerfeld house since 2011; Caroline Lebar, senior vice president, image and communications at Karl Lagerfeld, and Sébastien Jondeau, who was the designer’s personal assistant and bodyguard for two decades.
A new book about Dior to be released
If you are a fan of Dior, there is a new book coming up on November 3 in Europe and in January 2023 overseas. This three-volume book will contain a selection of photographs taken by Sarah Moon, a French photographer born in 1941, who has shot designs of everyone from the founder Christian Dior himself and his successors to the current artistic director of women’s collections Maria Grazia Chiuri.
Zara is launching a new collection with Kaia Gerber
If you love shopping at Zara, then you should know that the company has announced its new collaboration with the international supermodel Kaia Gerber during Paris Fashion Week. The new line, an homage to the American west coast, which is the model’s homeland, consists of 30 “new classics” of clothing, footwear and accessories with 90s vibes and neutral colors.
Fendi acquires a majority stake of Maglificio Matisse
The Italian luxury company based in Rome acquired a majority stake of the brand Maglificio Matisse. It is the first time that Fendi made a Mergers & Acquisitions deal with the goal to support family-owned Italian SMEs’ craftsmanship, know-how and supply chain. The two brands have been working together for more than 15 years, Maglificio Matisse being a key supplier of handmade knitwear made with an innovative technology.
For a little history, other Italian luxury brands have also committed to supporting Made in Italy products, as we have seen with Prada and Ermenegildo Zegna groups that acquired a majority stake in Filati Biagioli Modesto SpA, a cashmere supplier, in June 2021. Another example is Brunello Cucinelli who announced the acquisition of a 43% stake of Cariaggi Lanificio SpA - which is also specializing in cashmere - in March of this year.
Franca Fendi passed away at 87
The third-born daughter of the Fendi family, together with her four sisters Carla, Anna, Paola, and Aida, had helped to develop and expand the family-owned luxury house. She held retail responsibilities over the brand’s stores in Rome until the business was sold in 1999.
Balenciaga is reporting rapid growth
Balenciaga is a brand on everyone’s radar right now as it is expanding to international markets. The brand reported a 44% annual growth between 2020 and 2021 and a record net income of 222 million euros against 66 million euros a year earlier, with the number of sales in Asia-Pacific, Middle-East and Europe ranging from 8 million in Malaysia, up to 302 million euros in China.
The brand is also notable for a strong e-commerce strategy, and of course its strong-statement fashion shows that gained popularity recently, such as its RTW Fall 2022 show staged in a snowstorm and the recent Spring 2023 collection with models walking in the mud.
What’s new in Sustainability 🌱
Valentino has a new sustainability plan
In light of energy shortages affecting European countries right now, and Valentino’s commitment to make efforts for sustainability, the brand decided to turn off lights after 10 a.m in its 95 stores across the world.
Among the Italian brand’s sustainability actions, we can include that it stopped using fur and alpaca in its products as of this year, fabricated Open for Change sneakers made with recycled elements, and created a new section on their website “Creating Shared Value” dedicated to monitoring the brand’s actions to reduce environmental impact.
What’s new in the Beauty industry 💄
Sephora is opening in the UK
The beauty company, launched in 1969 in Limoges, France, announced that Sephora’s products will be available online soon in the UK, starting from October 17, and also at the Sephora pop-up store in London on October 20, as well as in the London store in the Spring of 2023 and in other stores planned to be opened nationwide later.
Apart from the already-known brands that you can find in Sephora, there are new products coming to the UK exclusively at Sephora, such as Makeup By Mario, the man behind many of Kim K's iconic looks; Gwen Stefani’s GXVE range, Patrick Starr’s One/Size, alongside Sephora exclusives including - viral favourites Tarte Cosmetics, Vegamour, Ilia and their affordable but brilliant own brand Sephora Collection.
